Will someone nurse me back to health?
I sparred with the Korean Hulk, the former Korean champion, who only lost two international fights after he had retired from boxing after Korea couldn't give him a challenge. So did Australia. We donned headgear and padded gloves and went at it.
Australia went first. Two three-minute rounds of hitting and getting hit. Obviously, K. Hulk didn't go full on after us--we've been practicing for two months now! But he wasn't shy about making us miss or hitting us when our guards dropped. I watched Australia get socked in the face with hooks, jabs, crosses, and uppercuts. I watched Australia miss with hooks, jabs, crosses, and uppercuts. He weaved into K. Hulk's punches and leaned back an inch too short so he still got clocked.
Then it was my turn. I did pretty well offensively at the start, but looking at the guy is chaos. He feels miles away but he's instantly all over me. I jab and miss (by inches every time Australia tells me). When I miss, he hits. When he goes forward, I retreat and still get hit. When I charge, he stops me with a punch. But I could guard most things.
Then he threw a hard shot to my stomach. I lost some breath but could keep going. Then he does it again. My mouth was open but no air was going in or out. I started trying to force it out because I felt like I was choking. Everyone's staring and K. Hulk stops hitting and Coach Amy asks if I'm alright or just joking and I can't respond and finally a big heave sends loud air from my throat and then I do it again and everyone is too shocked to say anything (there were about three Koreans watching plus Australia and Coach Amy). Between the hit and the first breath felt like a minute but we had already been sparring for at least two and we had another thirty seconds after, but I panicked.
I kept going for the second round but I was very cautious of any more body shots even though all his punches lightened up after that. I had no stamina after. My legs were dead and I got cornered a lot--as shown in the picture above. And in the dressing room, Australia freaked me out by telling me sometimes people get internal bleeding from those.
So I'll be watching my poop...
